Shashi Deshpande is a popular writer of India. He was born on 19 August 1938 in Dharwad district of Karnataka. Shashi has been a recipient of the highly prestigious Padma Shri award. She was also a member of the Sahitya Akademi. He was born to famous parents. He published his work of short stories in 1978 and his first novel ‘The Dark Holds No Terror’ in 1980. He was educated in Mumbai and Bengaluru. He received his education in law and economics. He further studied journalism at Vidya Bhavan and worked as a journalist for a short time with a popular magazine ‘Onlooker’. On top of that he got a degree in Arts.
Family
Shashi belonged to an upper-middle-class family and was married into the same family. She remembers the intellectual environment created at home by her father, the great novelist, playwright, director; Sriranga. His father affectionately called him ‘useless’ and his sister ‘Jaane’.

Shashi was born to renowned playwright and writer Aadya Rangacharya and Sharda Aadya. His father was known by his surname Sriranga. He has two siblings, a brother and a sister; Usha Desai. His relationship with his mother was not particularly perfect, as he mentions in his book Listen to Me. She also explains how her brother’s health issues took a toll on the family.

She is married to Dr. Dhirendra H. Deshpande and has 2 sons. She describes her husband as the most supportive and nurturing person, just like her father. He lost his son Raghu at an early age in 2017. His second son Vikram lives in America. While talking about the revelations of her personal life issues she mentions the wound of losing her son, which is actually still fresh and causes her immense pain and sorrow.

Award-winning author Shashi Deshpande started her writing career at the age of 30. After he got married and had two children, he began writing professionally. Earlier, she says that she could not be a housewife alone, her frustration expressed in her writings. Much of her writing is considered women’s writing or feminist writing. His opinion about his writing has always been strong and his writing is also seen. She says, she likes the simplest and most easily understood language to be used in her works. The showiness of language does not affect him. She also says that there are not many writers who can do something like this, making Arundhati Roy an exception. Her book, The Dark Holds No Terrors, was adapted into a film in 1997 by the first female director, Prema Karanth. In 2017, HarperCollins optioned the film rights to Strangers to Ourselves, directed by Hasal Mehta. Being an English writer, she faced a lot of prejudice because people often had preconceived notions about her being rich. Another thing he disliked the most was his works being categorized as being for women only, he said men would come to him to have books signed specifically for the women in their lives, he found it weird. He also feels that the fact that his first book was published by a foreign publisher played a huge role in how well the book was published, with foreign publishers often being an influencing factor in how books perform. Her first readers are always her husbands and the most hateful critics are those who bring personal stuff and inject malice into the review based on that.

- Deshpande was in the news when she resigned from the highly respected Sahitya Akademi following the murder of Professor MM Kalburgi, whom she describes as an honest person and scholar, who was also a member of the General Council of the Sahitya Akademi. After little effort was made by the Academy, he wrote his resignation letter. She was seen expressing her disappointment at not being able to take a united stand for the professor and calling him one of her own. He had expressed disappointment with the government and expressed disagreement over whether it wanted the Sahitya Akademi to be an activist institution. Deshpande further said, his only concern was to ensure freedom of expression to writers as Mr. Kalburgi had to bear the brunt of the same issue. She does not mince words and simply says that the government has come to power with the help of Hindutva forces and speaking against them will not benefit her and hence the silence.

According to Deshpande, feminism came from the consciousness of unfair treatment of women. She says that her writing was largely inspired by the idea of what it means to be a woman in our society. She talks about women and their issues in daily life. However her writings address issues that remain unspoken in society, such as marital rape, inappropriate behaviour, rape culture and the shame associated with it.
