Career

Surgeon

After completing his masters in Canada, Sharad Panday came back to India and was appointed as the chief of the second unit at King Edward Memorial Hospital and Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College (KEM) in Mumbai. He performed a number of open-heart surgeries, which was at a budding stage, in the early 1980s. In 1986, Dr Sharad Panday removed a large tumour from a patient’s left ventricle in an unusual heart operation at the Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital in Bombay. Due to the difficulty of operating on tumours in that part of the heart, this was the first procedure of its kind to be performed in India.

Panday was known for his inventiveness and for doing surgery while wading through knee-deep water. He would take a 0.5-inch (13 mm) tubing and connect it to the garden tap if the hospital’s water supply went out so that everyone could get ready for operations. The Panday shunt, a surgical technique used to replace the mitral valve, was created by Panday as a result of his need to improvise and adapt.
