Shankar Mahadevan is a popular Indian playback singer and composer. He is part of the famous Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy music trio. He is best known for rendition of the song ‘Breathless’.

Shankar Mahadevan was born on Friday, 3 March 1967 (age 52 years; as in 2019) in the Chembur suburb of Mumbai. He did his schooling from Our Lady of Perpetual Succor High School and Swami Vivekananda High School, Chembur. He received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering from Ramrao Adhik Institute of Technology, Navi Mumbai in 1988. By the age of 5, Shankar had already become a skilled harmonium player and had also started playing the veena. He learned Hindustani classical music from Pandit Srinivas Khale.

Before venturing into the music industry, Shankar worked as a software programmer for Oracle Corporation. Shankar started his music career by singing jingles for advertisements. Shankar Mahadevan made his singing debut in the 1994 film “Humse Hai Muqabla (Hindi version of the Tamil film – Kadhaalan)”, in which he sang two songs, “Petta Rap” and “Urvasi Urvasi”.

She made her Bollywood debut with the song “Tum Nahi Jaana” from the film “Duplicate” (1998). He has sung many hit songs, like “Chhamma Chamma,” “Bhumbro Bhumbro,” “Ghannan Ghanan,” “Maahi Ve,” “Kajra Re,” “Mitva,” “Sau Aasun,” and many more. In 1998, he released his first album “Breathless”, which brought Shankar to fame. The songs of the album were composed by Javed Akhtar.

Controversy

Shankar Mahadevan was judging the singing reality show ‘Rising Star: Season 3 (2019)’ along with Neeti Mohan and Diljit Dosanjh. During the show, two contestants made sexist comments on Neeti Mohan, after which she pretended to walk out of the show, calling the comments rude. When the contestants became worried, the judges declared the act a ‘prank’. However, this joke did not go down well with gender activist Kirti Ajay Kumar and she criticized the judges for it.

  • Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa form the popular music trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. During the early days of Shankar’s singing career, Ehsaan and Loy were already established composers in the advertising field. Shankar, along with the then duo of Ehsaan and Loy, often collaborated together for advertisements. Ehsaan and Loy often sought suggestions from Shankar while composing. In 1997, all three were named Mukul S. They got a chance to work together for a song in Anand’s film “Dus”, which was never released due to Mukul Anand’s death, but the music of the film was released later.
