Shaan was born as ‘Shantanu Mukherjee’ on Saturday, 30 September 1972 (age 49 years; as in 2021) in Khandwa city of Madhya Pradesh. His zodiac sign is Libra.
He spent his childhood in the Bandra area, where the majority were Catholic Christians. He did his schooling at the Jesuit School in Bandra. He took music training from Ghulam Mustafa Khan.
He has also attended classes at Suresh Wadkar’s Ajivasan Music Academy. After discovering that his performance was not satisfactory, he left the exam and did not resume his classes at the academy due to embarrassment.

- During his early days in the industry, Shaan was known as ‘Raja’, which was also his nickname. Talking about changing his pseudonym from ‘Raja’ to ‘Shaan’ he says-
Raja was not only my surname but also the contracted one. When I was working with Raju [Singh, composer] on a zee [Music] During the project in 1993, he asked me to sign the contract with the name Raja. biddu [composer-producer] Changed it from king to glory.
