Semaj Christon began his basketball career at Winton Woods High School. After graduating high school, he joined the Xavier University Musketeers for the 2012-13 season. On November 13, 2012, he made his Musketeer debut against Butler. Following his freshman season in 2012-2013, he was named Rookie of the Year and second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors after scoring the second-most points (456) in Xavier history.
In 2014, he started his professional basketball career. On June 26, 2014, Christon was selected by the Miami Heat with the 55th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Shortly after the draft, he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets. Soon after, he was acquired by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Christon played in the 2014 NBA Summer League for the Thunder, where he got his first taste of professional basketball. Later the following summer, on August 3, 2015, he signed with Consultinvest Pesaro in Italy’s Serie A. Christon rejoined the Oklahoma City Thunder for the 2016 NBA Summer League in July 2016. On August 20, 2016, he signed his first contract with the Thunder. . On October 26, 2016, he made his NBA debut in a 103–97 win against the Philadelphia 76ers.
