Sara Sunny is an Indian lawyer. She is the first deaf lawyer to appear before the Supreme Court of India.

Sara Sunny Parambet (age 25 years; as of 2023) started her schooling from Cluny Convent High School, Bangalore Karnataka, where she studied from 2002 to 2012. He then attended St. Claret Pre-University College from 2012 to 2014, where he studied economics, accounting, business and computers. In 2017, he received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Jyoti Nivas College Autonomous, Bangalore. Sara Sunny attended St. Joseph’s College of Law, Bangalore from 2017-21, where she obtained her Bachelor of Laws degree as a part of the first batch of the law school. In 2018, Sara interned for a month at the Indian Red Cross Society in Bengaluru. In 2019, Sara interned at Everstone Capital Advisors Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore for two months. She interned at Kochhar & Company Bengaluru for two months in 2020. He then interned under Lakshmikumaran and Sridharan in Bengaluru for a month in 2021. In 2021, he also interned for three months at the Center for Law and Policy Research in Bengaluru.

Sara Sunny’s father’s name is Sunny, who is a chartered accountant from Kottayam, Kerala. His mother’s name is Betty. Sarah has a twin sister named Maria who works as a chartered accountant for a French audit firm. The twins have a brother named Prateek who is eight years older than them and works in an IT firm in Texas.

Sara Sunny obtained her law degree in 2021 after which she enrolled with the Karnataka Bar Council to become a lawyer.

After interning at Access Mantra in Delhi, she realized that she was India’s first deaf lawyer. Sara Sunny worked as an Associate Lawyer with “Thiru & Thiru” (formerly known as Thiru & Company), a law firm in Bangalore. He worked at the firm from February 2022 to August 2023. She also helps at the Center for Law and Policy Research (CLPR), a non-profit trust, through which she gets the opportunity to practice constitutional and disability law. Supreme Court lawyer Colin Gonsalves, who founded the Human Rights Law Network (HRLN), brought Sara Sunny to be part of the non-profit organization in New Delhi.

On 22 September 2023, Sara Sunny became the first deaf lawyer to argue in the Supreme Court of India. Sara Sunny participated in the proceedings presided over by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. Advocate on record, Sanchita Ain requested the Chief Justice of India to allow Sara Sunny to argue, which the Chief Justice allowed. Sara Sunny participated in the proceedings and defended her client with the help of interpreter Saurav Roy Chowdhury. Saurav made them sign the proceedings and then explained the meaning of Sara’s sign language to the court.

The case was related to the rights of persons with disabilities. The proceedings were held virtually, and initially, the moderator allowed screen time only to interpreter Saurav Roy Chowdhury. After this, Justice Chandrachud ordered to give screen time to both Sara and Saurav. Sara Sunny said in an interview,

It was a dream come true experience for me. I had a great desire to plead a case in the highest court of judiciary of our country, which I had not expected so soon and that too was fulfilled in the presence of the Honorable Chief Justice of India. This gives me more confidence and courage. I want to be a role model for other people who are specially abled.”
