In 2008, Sanjay Singh took charge as the District President of Varanasi Wrestling Association. In 2009 he became the vice president of Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association. Later, he served as a member of the Executive Council of the WFI (Wrestling Federation of India). In 2019, he was appointed as the Joint Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Wrestling Federation of India. On 21 December 2023, Sanjay Singh was elected as the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). She defeated Commonwealth Games gold medalist Anita Sheoran in the WFI elections by a 40-7 vote share. In an interview after his victory in the WFI elections he said,
The command of the elections was in our hands from the very first day. Voting took place and whatever was to happen, happened. Truth won. We were confident with the amount of work we’ve done for the wrestlers. Wrestlers know that this is where they are going to benefit from. (The wrestlers know that only we can take care of their needs.) They know that everything was closed for the last 11 months. Wrestlers were not able to compete (under the Indian flag), everything was closed and all the wrestlers were dejected. Those circumstances were enough to tell us that victory was ours.”

Controversy over victory in WFI elections
Sanjay Singh’s victory in the 2023 WFI elections faced criticism from various wrestlers as he was supported by Brij Bhushan Singh, who was accused of sexually harassing female wrestlers. Following his victory, wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat addressed the media at the Press Club of India, during which they expressed their disappointment towards the government by claiming that the government was trying to exclude Brij Bhushan’s relatives and associates. He doesn’t care who is saying what or what he is not saying. (What anyone is saying or not saying, it doesn’t matter to us.) We have no ill will towards any wrestler. Whoever comes with us and wrestles well will be welcomed. This is not just our victory; This is also a victory for the wrestlers.”
