Sanjay Leela Bhansali was born on 24 February 1963 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2015. He was part of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). In 1997, he founded the production company Bhansali Productions and produced many films under his production like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Black (2005), Saawariya (2007), Guzaarish (2010), etc.

After completing his studies, Sanjay started working as an assistant director and assisted director Vidhu Vinod Chopra on the films Parinda and 1942: A Love Story. In 1996, he wrote and directed his first film Khamoshi: The Musical, which was not commercially successful, but the film’s story received critical acclaim. His second directorial venture Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was a huge hit and was screened at the Indian Panorama section of the International Film Festival of India in 1999. In 2013, some religious people were against the film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela directed by him. He claimed that the film’s earlier title ‘Ramleela’ was misleading as there was not a single part in it that was related to ‘Ramleela’ (the story of Lord Ram). The Delhi High Court issued orders to ban the film, claiming that it hurts the religious sentiments of Hindus. After this the name of the film was changed to Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and it was released in India as per schedule but, Allahabad High Court banned the film and the film could not be released in Uttar Pradesh.
