Sanjay Leela Bhansali was born on 24 February 1963 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2015. He was part of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). In 1997, he founded the production company Bhansali Productions and produced many films under his production like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Black (2005), Saawariya (2007), Guzaarish (2010), etc.

After completing his studies, Sanjay started working as an assistant director and assisted director Vidhu Vinod Chopra on the films Parinda and 1942: A Love Story. In 1996, he wrote and directed his first film Khamoshi: The Musical, which was not commercially successful, but the film’s story received critical acclaim. His second directorial venture Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was a huge hit and was screened at the Indian Panorama section of the International Film Festival of India in 1999. His third directorial venture Devdas (2002) was screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and India submitted the film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His film Black (2005) received a record-breaking eleven Filmfare Awards.
In 2006, she judged the dance reality TV show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 1 with Shilpa Shetty and Farah Khan and in 2011, she judged the music talent TV show X Factor India with Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam.
In 2008, he directed the stage opera Padmavati. The show was premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy, where the show received a fifteen-minute standing ovation and seven curtain calls after the first act ended. In 2010, he wrote, directed, produced and even composed the music for the film Guzaarish. Her film Mary Kom (2014) was screened at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and became the first Hindi film to be screened on the opening night of the festival.
In 2013, he produced the Hindi TV serial Saraswatichandra, which received positive reviews, but he left the serial after producing a few episodes. His film Bajirao Mastani (2015) became one of the highest-grossing Indian films and was screened in the Indian Panorama section at the 2016 International Film Festival of India. In 2016, he produced his first Marathi film Laal Ishq.

He has been involved in some controversies during his film career-
In 2013, some religious people were against the film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela directed by him. He claimed that the film’s earlier title ‘Ramleela’ was misleading as there was not a single part in it that was related to ‘Ramleela’ (the story of Lord Ram). The Delhi High Court issued orders to ban the film, claiming that it hurts the religious sentiments of Hindus. After this the name of the film was changed to Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and it was released in India as per schedule but, Allahabad High Court banned the film and the film could not be released in Uttar Pradesh.
In January 2017, members of the Rajput caste organization Shri Rajput Karni Sena physically attacked him during the shooting of the film Padmaavat, initially titled Padmavati, claiming that he had portrayed some wrong facts in the film. . He also tried to damage the set. In March 2017, again some people attacked the production set in Kolhapur and set it on fire, due to which almost all the costumes and jewelery were burnt.
