Sanjay Karol is a judge of the Supreme Court of India. He is the former Chief Justice of Patna High Court and Tripura High Court. He has also served as a judge and acting Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.

Sanjay Karol was born on Wednesday, 23 August 1961 (age 61 years; as in 2022) in village Garli, Dehra Gopipur, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. His zodiac sign is Virgo. He did his schooling from St. Edward’s School, Shimla in 1977. He earned a bachelor’s degree in History from Government College, Sanjauli. In 1985, he earned a law degree from the Faculty of Law, Himachal Pradesh University. In 1986, he enrolled as an advocate and started practicing in various courts including the Honorable Supreme Court of India in constitutional, taxation, corporate, criminal and civil matters. During his practice, he was counsel in Inter-State Water Disputes (BBMB Project) in the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.

Facts/General Knowledge
- In 2017, he ordered the construction of public toilets on national highways for people traveling by public buses. He also declared that forcing people to urinate or defecate in public due to the absence of public toilets is a violation of their dignity.
- In 2017, when he was serving in the Himachal Pradesh High Court, he delivered judgments on issues such as removing discrimination against married women in employment matters, checking illegal mining and protecting rivers from illegal operation of dams. Following his decisions, several measures were taken to solve the problem including installing cameras in prisons to check human rights violations, building roads, protecting UNESCO heritage sites, improving medical facilities in hospitals, improving forest . - On 1 June 2018, when he was serving as the acting Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, he went to the area at 3 in the morning to check the records of complaints related to water supply. This initiative taken by Karol was greatly appreciated by the people.
- Once he delivered a verdict in a case that impressed many people and earned Karol much praise. He helped a girl named Indu Kumari, who had filed a petition as she was denied admission to Himachal Pradesh University under the 5% quota under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Keeping in view the provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, section 32 of which has a clear provision that 5% of the seats are to be reserved for persons with disabilities, the task of the University is to reserve only 3% of the seats. % seats for disabled persons is completely unfair and is not acceptable as it is in violation of law.
- In 2019, when he was working in Patna High Court, he took some steps to save the environment. He did not allow the destruction of Peepal trees in the High Court premises for the construction of the new building. He asked the engineers to change the design and reshape the building complex so that the Peepal trees are not damaged.
- His name was recommended for the post of Supreme Court judge on 13 December 2022, but there was no confirmation from the central government. Others joining Karol as judges are Rajasthan HC Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal, Manipur HC Chief Justice PV Sanjay Kumar, Patna HC Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Allahabad HC Justice Manoj Mishra.
- In an interview, Karol said that the aim of his life was to help all poor litigants, for which he also adopted methods of conciliation and mediation and proposed legal clinics at the Panchayat level.
- He is known for his polite behavior. According to a media report, Karol once saved the life of a milkman who had fainted after visiting Lakkar Bazaar in Shimla. Karol was passing by when he saw him lying on the road and immediately got out of the car and asked his driver to take the man to the hospital.
