Sam Smith’s Fans Correct the Narrative After Singer is Incorrectly Identified as Subject of Viral Stage Dive Clip

Sam Smith‘s fans are correcting the narrative.

The 31-year-old “I’m Not Here to Make Friends” hitmaker was incorrectly identified in a viral video from a failed stage dive.

As the clip circulated social media, the subject of it was met with vitriolic comments and body shaming. Sam‘s name trended in the midst of it all, and then their fans stepped up to clear the air.

The clip in question features a person wearing a green bodysuit who leaps into a crowd from onstage only to seemingly land on the ground. Sam was seemingly first identified as the person in the clip by conservative accounts that rushed to mock them.

As their name trended, another video emerged making it clear that it wasn’t Sam.

“Despite various ACCOUNTS spreading false information. Sam Smith DID not stage dive at any Concert,” one fan account wrote, sharing the second clip of the incident. A second tweet revealed that the footage originated at a Vanilla Ice concert.

Another fan pointed out how quickly “right wingers” ran with the false narrative as a way to speak critically of the “Unholy” hitmaker.

“The obsession right wingers have with Sam Smith has combined with their affinity for fake news & false information. This is so CLEARLY not Sam, they have truly never fact checked a day in their life,” they tweeted.

Another Twitter user expressed sympathy for the person in the video, writing, “That must’ve really hurt.”

A few days before the video went viral, another Twitter user even called out cruel narratives about Sam that spread regularly.

“every now and then, sam smith trends and it’s always full of fatphobic and transphobic posts. you can dislike sam smith as much as you like but stop misgendering them and bodyshaming them. jesus, you’re literally becoming obsessed,” they wrote.

Sam faced a similar controversy with the release of their “I’m Not Here to Make Friends” music video earlier this year. At the time, they spoke out about their body image.

If you forgot, they and collaborator Kim Petras were also at the center of complaints following their performance at the 2023 Grammys.
