Saira Shah Haleem is an Indian politician, social and political activist, theater artist, teacher and corporate trainer. She is known for being the niece of Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah. In April 2022, he contested the Ballygunge Assembly by-election as a Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate.

Born in a family with a military background, Saira was brought up in various cities across India. She did her primary education at International Indian School, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and then went to Lawrence School, Lovedale, Tamil Nadu for her secondary education. Saira did her graduation from Sophia Girls College, Ajmer.

Saira Shah started her political career in March 2022 as a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). On 29 March 2022, he was announced as the CPI(M) candidate for the 2022 Ballygunge Assembly by-election.
In an interview, remembering the day when her candidature was announced, Saira said,
We were leaving for the trip to Assam, when I got a call from the senior leadership and I was asked if I could fight this battle. I was surprised but I was prepared.
The Ballygunge by-election was held on 12 April 2022 after the TMC stronghold seat fell vacant following the death of veteran Trinamool leader and cabinet minister Subrata Mukherjee in November 2021. Contesting the elections against singer-turned-politician and former Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Babul Supriyo of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Saira actively campaigned.
During an interview, Saira revealed that even though she was contesting elections for the first time, politics was nothing new for her. He said,
I’ve been there, done that. In my house, dinner table conversations have always been about politics. Only this time I myself am the candidate. The party which has been an integral part of my life for the last two decades challenged me and I accepted it.

Saira has worked with Poetry Couture, a pro bono initiative to revive the culture of reading poetry and prose. Saira has been invited as a speaker at the Kolkata Literary Festival several times. He is one of the founding members of Poetry Paradigm, a Kolkata-based non-profit organization. Other members of the club include Joey Bose, Ashok Vishwanathan, Ananya Chatterjee and Arthur Cardozo.
Saira also contributes to the Kolkata-based blog The Beacon Kolkata. Shah has organized many cultural and literary programs in Kolkata. Haleem has also participated in Sampark literary evening. In 2016, Shah chaired two sessions of the prestigious Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet. She has appeared as a speaker at several TEDx events.
She is a social activist and has worked for many relevant issues like gender equality and protecting democracy and secularism. In 2017, he acted in the short film ‘Ek Khas Aadmi’ based on a social issue. This film was screened on NDTV Talkies.
Halim is a member of the West Bengal Federation of United Nations Association. She has also been a part of the Rotary Club of Ballygunge, a Kolkata-based NGO that works for social causes.
Saira has been a part of several protests, including protests against the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Local workers proposed my name to the party because I have my own political identity. I am going door-to-door and talking to voters. I have my own vision for the constituency.
- During an interview, Saira told that she is very fond of her birthplace Kolkata. He said,
Due to my father’s posting, I lived in many places, studied in a boarding school in Ooty, did my college from Rajasthan. An Army family doesn’t really have any attachment to any one place – that’s the way we were brought up – but it is Kolkata that has given me my identity. This is my city and I am proud to serve the people of this state.”
