In September 2011, Safyan Sharif made his first-class cricket debut against Namibia during the 2011–13 ICC Intercontinental Cup, held at the Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek. After that, he played two more List A matches against Namibia during the ICC Intercontinental Cup One-Day competition. During the tour, Safyan Sharif also took part in four Twenty20 matches against the Namibian team. He was successful in taking 8 wickets in those matches. On average, he gave around 10.37 runs per wicket. His best performance in those matches was when he took 3 wickets for 29 runs.

In February 2012, Safyan Sharif played his second first-class match against the United Arab Emirates in the Intercontinental Cup. After that, he was selected to be part of the Scotland squad for the World Twenty20 Qualifier series.

In March 2018, Safyaan Sharif achieved a milestone in his cricket career when he took a five-wicket haul in a One Day International (ODI) match against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo during the Cricket World Cup Qualifier. This was the first time that Safyaan Sharif’s exceptional performance earned him the player of the match title, even though the game ended in a tie. He took five wickets for just 33 runs in just 8.4 overs. The International Cricket Council (ICC) recognized him as a rising star for the Scotland squad following the Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

In May 2018, English team Derbyshire County Cricket Club signed Safyaan Sharif as part of their squad for the 2018 Royal London One-Day Cup and 2018 T20 Blast tournaments. Safyaan Sharif was selected to play for Scotland in the 2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier match held in the United Arab Emirates in September 2019. He led the Scotland team with thirteen dismissals in seven matches throughout the tournament. Additionally, in June 2019, Safyaan Sharif was selected to join the Edmonton Royals franchise squad for the 2019 Global T20 Canada competition.
