Rumeli Dhar is an Indian cricketer. Former Indian captain and all-rounder Rumeli came into limelight after producing several match-winning performances at the 2005 World Cup in South Africa. On 22 June 2022, Dhar announced his retirement from international cricket (all formats).

Rumeli Anup Dhar was born on Friday, 9 December 1983 (age 38 years; as in 2021) in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, India. Their zodiac sign is Sagittarius. Rumeli became interested in cricket at a very young age and grew up playing cricket during her school days. Although he enjoyed batting and bowling, Rumeli was selected in his school’s cricket team for his exemplary fielding. One of his uncles, who owned a cricket academy in Kolkata, recognized his talent and encouraged him to play the game at the professional level. In an interview, while talking about his early days of coaching in cricket, he said,
My uncle was my first coach and I used to be the only girl among 80-100 boys in his academy. In those days when girls were frowned upon to wear jeans, I somehow managed to play the game. Before becoming a full-time cricketer, I represented junior states in gymnastics and also played volleyball at the school national level. It was 1996 when I played with a leather ball for the first time. Cricket being an expensive game, my family, who had a normal economic background, was skeptical about letting me play the game. My uncle convinced my mother and I was allowed to pursue my passion. My uncle supported me financially and some senior boys with whom I used to play gave me cricket equipment.”

Rumeli Dhar started her domestic cricket career in 1998 when she was selected to play for West Bengal in the Under 19 team. After representing West Bengal, Rumeli played for Air India for some time.

Rumeli Dhar made her ODI debut on 27 January 2003 in the Women’s Cricket World Series against England in New Zealand at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln. He performed brilliantly in the match; Scored the winning runs by giving just 10 runs including three maidens in six overs and bowled economically. He played six matches for Team India in the series and was later dropped from the Indian team. Earlier, Rumeli had secured a place in the 1999 Indian camp for the 2000 World Cup, however, she failed to make a place for herself in the Indian team. In 2005, she delivered several match-winning performances at the Women’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa, leading the team to the final. On 21 November the same year, Rumeli made his debut in Test cricket against England. His T20 International debut was in 2006 against England.

He played his last test match on 29 August 2006 against England. She opened the bowling with Jhulan Goswami in the 2007 Quadrangular Tournament in Chennai and the Twenty20 World Cup in England. Rumeli performed exceptionally well at the 2009 Women’s Twenty20 World Cup in England and helped India reach the semi-finals, where they lost to New Zealand. Rumeli was the number 1 wicket taker bowler in the match. After this, she played for Young India against Pakistan. After playing for Team India for six consecutive years, Rumeli was ruled out of the Indian team in 2012 due to a shoulder injury. After a gap of almost six years, Dhar made an unexpected comeback to the Indian team in 2018, playing three T20 Internationals, two against South Africa and one against Australia.

On 22 June 2022, Rumeli announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket. He announced his retirement on Instagram. Rumeli wrote,
My 23-year long cricket career, which started from Shyamnagar, West Bengal, has finally come to an end as I announce my retirement from all forms of cricket. This journey has been long with ups and downs. The highest was representing the Indian women’s cricket team, playing the World Cup final in 2005 and also leading the Women in Blue.
Saying goodbye to the game, he further wrote,
A series of injuries affected my career but I always came back stronger to carry it forward. Today as I bid goodbye to the game I have always loved, I thank my family, the BCCI, my friends, the teams I represented (Bengal, Railways, Air India, Delhi, Rajasthan and Assam) for my abilities. But thank you for believing in me and giving me a chance. Opportunity to play for your teams. He helped pave my way for the Indian team.
Concluding his post, Dhar wrote,
Every match in this long career taught me a lesson which will help me in my second innings. Like all journeys, my journey too will end today as a cricketer, but I promise to stay connected to the game and help nurture young talent in the country and give back to the game in every possible way.
In his 15-year career, Rumeli has played four International Test matches, 78 One Day Internationals and 18 Twenty20 Internationals, scoring a total of 1328 runs and taking 81 wickets. His last international appearance was against Australia on 22 March 2018.

I was dropped from the Indian team in 2012 due to a shoulder injury. This was a big shock for me. I had no idea about my future prospects and whether I would be able to make a comeback or not. I went back to playing domestic cricket. I played for Assam, Rajasthan and Delhi for two years each. While playing for the state, I missed playing for India a lot. My family and friends supported me a lot during those six years. After waiting patiently, I got a call to represent India and I had to play my comeback match at the same ground in South Africa where we played the World Cup final in 2005. It was as if coming full circle. The match was cancelled, but I remember Mithali and I took a picture there and it still remains with me as a fond memory.
