Ruby Franke’s family is breaking their silence over her arrest.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that the 8 Passengers creator had been arrested and charged with two counts of child abuse. She and her partner Jodi Hildebrandt were arrested after a neighbor called because a child had come to her house looking for food and water.
Ruby’s sisters Elle Mecham, Bonnie Hoellein and Julie Deru posted a joint statement on their respective Instagram accounts on Thursday (August 31) in response to the news.

“For the past 3 years we have remained silent on the subject of Ruby Franke for the sake of her children,” they wrote, according to E! News. “Behind the public scene, we have done everything we can to try to make sure children were safe. We wouldn’t feel right moving forward with regular content without addressing the most recent events. Once we do, we will not comment further on it.”
They added: “Ruby was arrested, which had to happen. Jodi was arrested, which had to happen. “The children are safe now, which is the number one priority.”
Local outlet Fox 13 reports that a boy was seen climbing out of Jodi’s window and then ran to a neighbor’s house to get help and asked for food and water. The neighbor noticed the boy had duct tape on his ankles and wrists, at which point he called the police.
The boy was later taken to a hospital where he was treated for “serious” injuries and malnutrition. According to authorities, a second child was found in the same residence “in similar physical conditions of malnutrition” and was also taken to the hospital.
Ruby’s eldest daughter, Shari, also issued a statement regarding her mother’s arrest. Find out what she said here.
