Ron Taverner News

In order to preserve the integrity of front-line officers, Ron Taverner has announced that he is withdrawing from consideration to become the next commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police.

Given the controversy surrounding his appointment in the latter part of last year, the 72-year-old superintendent of the Toronto Police announced in a statement Wednesday night that he would not accept the position. Premier Doug Ford’s family friend Taverner was hired, prompting claims of political meddling in the selection of the best police officer in the province.

I find it difficult to make this choice, Taverner admitted. “I think the OPP needs fresh leadership and a culture shift at its highest levels. The tens of thousands of men and women who serve on the OPP’s front lines demand leadership that prioritises their needs and general well-being. The government has acknowledged that it decreased the standards for the commissioner position since Taverner initially did not meet them in order to attract more applicants.

An investigation of Taverner’s hire is being conducted by Ontario’s Integrity Commissioner, and a former OPP deputy commissioner has filed a lawsuit to compel Ontario’s ombudsman to look into the hiring. The provincial ombudsman has been ordered to conduct an investigation into the hire, according to Blair, who was also a candidate for the top position.

In a statement of his own on Wednesday, Ford expressed appreciation to Taverner for submitting his name, stating that Taverner’s “50 years of policing experience and support for the front lines would have been a tremendous asset to the OPP and to the people of Ontario.” Ford also criticised the opposition groups that have been putting pressure on him to fire Taverner and restart the recruiting process for months.

The opposition, he continued, “has chosen to politicise this process instead of focusing on how we can support our front-line officers,” which is really disappointing.

Despite Taverner’s resignation, NDP leader Andrea Horwath stated a thorough inquiry into the incident is still required. Horwath said in a statement that Supt. Ron Taverner “today did what Doug Ford has continuously refused to do, and preserved the OPP’s integrity with his withdrawal.” The need for a thorough public investigation of Doug Ford’s interference with the OPP is made even more urgent by this enigmatic and sudden about-face.
