Matthew McConaughey shares the warning he gave his son Levi about social media before allowing him to join

Matthew McConaughey is opening up about letting his oldest son join Instagram.

“Let’s talk about what it is. Let’s talk about falls. Let’s talk about falls. Let’s talk about assets. Let’s talk about cheating,” Matthew recalled telling Levi during an appearance on Today.

“Let’s talk about what you want to say,” Matthew continued. “What’s your story? Because what happens a lot of times with young people and social media is that they wake up in the morning and the first thing that comes to their mind is, ‘What’s going to be a good post?’ Instead of ‘What do I want to do today’?

Matthew added that “they’re still taking baby steps toward, you know, how much he’s immediately in touch with that. What he is exporting.”

“And we are reviewing, measuring, discussing things. We made him look at a lot of other people he admired and their posts,” Matthew explained. “We talked, ‘Why do you like those?’ And then you saw certain people who maybe had more successes and you say, ‘But why did they do it?’”

“’Were they relevant for reasons that really spoke to being more themselves, rather than acting like someone else?’” Matthew asked Levi. “The discussion continues.”

Last month, Matthew, Camila and Levi launched a new fundraiser to help those affected by the Maui wildfires.
