Rohit Kumar arrested in dowry murder case
On 21 October 2016, Rohit Kumar was arrested from Colaba, Mumbai, three days after his wife Lalita committed suicide. He was taken into police custody, Chhillar’s two-day police custody ended on 25 October 2016 when he was brought before the Metropolitan Magistrate, who remanded him to judicial custody till 8 November. After investigation, the police found a two-hour audio message and a 25-minute video that Lalita had made before committing suicide, in which she claimed that her in-laws used to harass her over small things. There was also a suicide note in which she wrote: “I am not strong enough to survive this, I have decided to quit my job.” After investigation, a case of dowry death was registered against Rohit Kumar and his parents on the complaint of Lalita’s father Karan Singh. ) Later, Rohit uploaded a video on his Facebook account claiming that he never hurt his wife and that he still cannot believe that she is no more. He said,
I can’t even imagine that she is gone…I couldn’t even see her for the last time, I played for the country, never harmed anyone. I’m sure my wife didn’t say anything like that. My father-in-law also knows that I never asked for dowry, I am alive only to prove my innocence. I never did anything wrong…when I get justice, I will go (to my wife).
Reportedly, Lalita also claimed in her audio recording that her husband was unhappy with her, due to which she took the extreme step.
