News about Robert Hanssen

Robert Hanssen, the legendary FBI double agent who helped Russia gain access to some of the most sensitive American secrets in the 1980s and 1990s, died Monday at a maximum security facility, according to prison officials.

Robert Hanssen, the FBI’s most powerful double agent, has died.

In 1985, Hanssen introduced himself to Soviet military intelligence, offering to sell diamonds and large sums of money for government secrets and the names of American spies operating in the Soviet and Russian governments.

He was able to conceal his activities by allegedly investigating Moscow spies in the United States since he worked for the key counterintelligence division of the FBI in New York, which is tasked with hunting down foreign spies.

On February 18, 2001, he was finally arrested while exchanging messages with his Russian managers in a suburb of Virginia, near Washington.

A year later, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Hanssen, 79, was found unconscious early Monday morning at the US maximum security prison in Florence, Colorado, and later pronounced dead, according to the prison statement.

The agency called him “the most destructive agent in the history of the FBI.” Hanssen first worked as a police officer in Chicago before joining the FBI in 1976. He joined the counterintelligence division of the New York office, where agents spent a lot of time spying on and trying to recruit Soviet officials to the UN, nine years later.

Instead, he quickly offered his services to the opposition under the guise of “Ramon Garcia”, even the people controlling him were unaware of his true identity.

When discovered, he was considered the most destructive spy ever to reveal American secrets to foreign countries, having given thousands of top-secret American documents to the Soviet Union and then Russia.

These include the names of U.S. sources in Moscow, software tracking cases of espionage, and U.S. preparations for nuclear war. One of those sources was Dmitri Polyakov, more commonly known as “Tophat”, a Soviet commander who passed Soviet secrets to the US in the 1960s and 1980s.

In 1986, Poljakov was arrested and a few years later killed. Hanssen collected more than $1.4 million (US$2.1 million) in cash and diamonds for his treachery, which is attributed to money and intrigue rather than principle.
