Panjurli, a ghost (a divine spirit of male wild boar) who is a protector of righteousness and a part of Bhoot Kola, was portrayed as Varaha, an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu, in the 2022 film ‘Kantara’. In an interview, Rishabh Shetty courted controversy when he considered the Bhoota Kola tradition of the Dakshina Kannada region to be part of Hindu culture, saying,
Those gods, they are all part of our tradition. Certainly it is part of Hindu culture and Hindu customs. Because I am a Hindu, I have faith and respect for my religion. But I wouldn’t say that other people are wrong. What we have said is through the element that is present in Hinduism.”
Netizens criticized Panjurli for portraying him as Varaha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Later, Rishabh defended himself by saying that he did not want to hurt people’s religious beliefs; He went to rural coastal Karnataka for research and to be more precise about the culture, where all these rituals and stories originated.
