Richard Dreyfuss is not a fan of the inclusion rules recently implemented by The Academy.
The 75-year-old actor, best known for his roles in The work of Mr. Holland, Shark and What about Bob?is criticizing The Academy for the rules, which take effect next year.
He Academy Awards 2024 will feature four new diversity and inclusion standards, which were announced in 2020. To be eligible for the best picture category, at least two of these standards must be met.
The four standards have the common goal of promoting diversity in on-screen representation, themes, and narratives, promoting diversity among leadership and department heads, providing opportunities for underrepresented groups, and expanding representation in audience development.

Richard, however, is speaking out against the rules, in a new interview with PBS. Line of Fire with Margaret Hooverthrough Variety.
“It’s an art. No one should tell me as an artist that I have to give in to the latest and most current idea of what morality is,” she said on the show. “What are we risking? Do we really run the risk of hurting people’s feelings? That cannot be legislated.”
He continued: “You have to let life be life. I’m sorry, I don’t think there is a minority or a majority in the country that has to be treated like this.”
While talking about the rules, Richard apparently also spoke out in support of blackface, specifically about Laurence Olivier’s 1965 performance. othello.

“He brilliantly played a black man. Are you telling me that I will never get the chance to play a black man? Has anyone else been told that if he’s not Jewish, he shouldn’t play? [in] The merchant of Venice? We are crazy? Ricardo reacted. “This is so condescending. It’s so inconsiderate and treating people like children.”
