Rene Murat Auberjonois was his birth name. Fernand Auberjonois, his father, was a Cold War-era international journalist and Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer. His mother, Laure Louise Napoléone Eugénie Caroline Murat, was the great-great-granddaughter of Joachim Murat. From his mother’s first marriage, Auberjonois has a sister, a brother and two half-sisters. After World War II, his family moved to Paris, France. He decided to become an actor from an early age. His family returned to the United States after spending several years in France.
