Renato started playing football at the age of eight. He started his club career in the local team Guias da Musgueira. He joined the junior system of SL Benfica in 2006. In 2006, he joined the Portuguese team Sports Lisboa e Benfica. From 2006 to 2016, he was a member of the Benfica youth team. Renato was promoted to the Benfica senior team in 2015. On 30 October 2015, he made his debut for the senior team, coming on as a 74th-minute substitute for Jonas in a 4–0 win against Tondela.
