TikTok user Scattered Mother, a self-proclaimed “trailer park mom,” has found success online by sharing relatable glimpses into the lives of her “low-income family.”
Known only as Aeilla, or Mama A, the mom vlogger has amassed an impressive 112,000 followers and over 2 million likes on the video-sharing platform in just two months. How did she do it? Showing how she buys and prepares affordable meals for herself, her partner, her construction worker, and her two children, ages 5 and 18 months.
@scatteredmother Chicken tortellini with Alfredo sauce and a side of mixed vegetables. Both of my children have an aversion to meat. I tried introducing some of this to my 18 month old son and he wouldn’t eat any of it. He ate some vegetables, yogurt and cheese. My 5 year old son had noodles with nutritional yeast, yogurt and popcorn. #fypシ #dinner #dinnertime #cookwithme #cooktok #cookingtiktok #pickyeater #trailerpark #sahmlife #momsoftiktok #momlife #momtok ♬ original sound – Mama A
According to Aeilla, the family lives solely on her husband’s salary of $30,000 a year. After paying rent of $750, she has very little left to cover her remaining living expenses.
The family’s financial struggles, he says, are the reason he turned to TikTok. Without using high-end equipment or filters, “Mama A” offers an honest look at how she feeds his family.
The TikToker doesn’t even bother to look “camera-ready,” preferring to show what she really looks like on a normal day. “I have two children,” said the 28-year-old mother. New York Post. “I don’t have much time to pamper myself and look like a supermodel.”
Due to her unfiltered approach to vlogging, Aeilla’s following grew rapidly, with many users complimenting her approach and thanking her for her money-saving tips. “My meals appeal to people who want things that are very, very easy and don’t have a lot of ingredients,” Mama A explained.
How the ‘Trailer Park Mom’ Keeps Her Grocery Bill Low
The key to a low grocery bill, Aeilla explains, starts with a strict focus on shopping. You never exceed your allotted $250 per week and avoid impulse purchases by sticking strictly to your shopping list.
The mother of 2 also recommends coupons. Simply using the vouchers she receives in the mail, she explains, allows her to rack up discounts.
If the need arises to remove something from the list, Aeilla always puts sugary snacks back on the shelves instead of more nutritious options. Fresh produce, she says, always takes priority over ice cream sandwiches and other treats.
@scatteredmother We had quite a bit of beef that I need to use up in my freezer, so I didn’t get much meat on this trip! #fypシ #groceryhaul #groceries #shopwithme #sahmlife #momsoftiktok #momlife #wfhm #familyof4 #kroger ♬ original sound – Mama A
Her last tip is to use a touch of creativity in meals. Freezing meat gives it a much longer shelf life. Then, at the end of the week, throw together the leftover ingredients instead of wasting anything.
Aeilla’s “lazy” meals include things like beef enchiladas, tacos, chicken and beef tortellini, and broccoli.
The housewife revealed that she has already earned several thousand dollars since she started her TikTok account in December 2023. Mama A’s fans also regularly send her useful gifts, such as diapers, children’s snacks, and other household items.
Despite his steady increase in income, Aeilla says he has no plans to change his practical way of saving money. “I’m being myself,” she said simply. “I guess it’s relatable.”
