Red Dead Redemption 2 is a modern gaming masterpiece led by the incredible protagonist Arthur Morgan. Fans are a bit skeptical about the new character, as John Marston is a game icon and a major reason for the success of the first game. But Arthur immediately captivates the player with his sense of humor, charming personality and pitiful fate.
But this is a Rockstar game, and Rockstar games aren’t known for having morally sane protagonists. Depending on how he plays, Arthur Morgan can be downright nasty, as is evident in these gruesome lines.

During one of his visits to the Downs family to collect gang money, Arthur turns to the grieving Archie Downs and utters the most iconic line in the entire game: “Maybe when your mother is done mourning your father. , I’ll let her wear black. Friend”.
Arthur just threatened Archie to death, and he said it in the best, most poetic way possible. It also proves that Arthur is a cruel villain who threatens to die after maliciously attacking (and possibly causing his death) a teenager’s father.
“After us, there are law enforcement officers in three different states.”
Sometimes it’s hard to forget how evil the Van der Linde gang really is. This gang is a relic of a bygone era – the age of cowboys and lawlessness. Now, “civilization” is invading and the cowboys have nowhere to go.
As Arthur clearly said, “we have law enforcement in three different states supporting us.” The exact crime is unknown, but it is crucial to the FBI’s pursuit of modern-day criminal gangs. The team members are charming, but none of them are nice people.
“I hope it’s hot and bad, Mrs. Downs. Otherwise, I feel like I’ve been sold a counterfeit bill.”
Arthur Morgan is really at his worst dealing with the Downs. This makes sense on the subject, as Thomas Downs accidentally infected Arthur with tuberculosis, which of course caused his physical decline. In a karmic way, Arthur has been punished by the universe in a way that is not morally best for him.
The grieving Mrs Downs basically tells Arthur he’s going to hell, and Arthur responds in the most condescending and indifferent way possible, even showing a hint of pride.
“We are thieves living in a world that doesn’t need us anymore.”
This sentence again summarizes the basic theme of the entire game. Arthur exhibits self-reflection in the quote above, acknowledging the fact that a) the gang is made up of thieves and bad guys, b) this makes them outlaws in a the world is increasingly modern and civilized, and c) they have no place in modern society.
Arthur is a villain, but he’s certainly not stupid. Unfortunately, he feels he has gone too far and that he has committed a gang crime.
“Yeah yeah yeah!”
The great thing about these games is that players can customize their own Arthur Morgan while sticking to the same general plot and character arc. As a result, players can choose how to react to certain people and situations. In Saint-Denis, there was a feminist who advocated for women’s suffrage.
But instead of sympathizing with her cause, Arthur approached her and said condescendingly, “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!” Perhaps the most reprehensible response in this case.
“I don’t care about your family.”
Arthur’s attack on Thomas Downs really pushes the line between “a lovable playable character” and “an obnoxious protagonist that the player might not even want to control.” While beating Downs for money, Downs begs Arthur and tells him that he has a family. Arthur, a former professional criminal, simply said, “I don’t care about your family.”
It is an extremely harsh and heartless practice, especially when the family is said to be near witnessing their ailing husband/father being beaten.
“Are you looking for trouble?”
Arthur Morgan is basically an asshole. He is really annoying. It is possible to run into random people on the street, and sometimes Arthur will ask them, “Are you looking for trouble?” This will result in the person begging Arthur to stop or punishing him and hitting back.
These guys were walking down the street, minding their own business when Arthur approached, asked if they wanted trouble, and would probably hit/kill them after they fought back. That’s one of the reasons why Arthur is a real villain.
“You ran well!”
In a way, Arthur Morgan was a serial killer of the late 19th century. He kills without remorse and without a plan, often choosing his victims at random.
When he chased someone on the road or in the field, he would taunt them with shouts of “you are a good runner” and then execute them, showing how evil he was.
“You are a sad little thing, right?”
Children are limited regardless of game level. Rockstar is aware of this and continues to exclude children from their open world games. Young Jack was the exception, although he did very little throughout the entire game.
However, it can be offensive to the boy, which makes Arthur a truly despicable character. Is it lowly to call a small child “sad thing”? Really low.
“We both deserve to die.”
Arthur is nothing without self-awareness. In the “bad” ending (the ending obtained if the player has low honor), Micah curses Arthur before executing him. However, the last words were Arthur shouting, “Damn us both!” right before he was killed.
Arthur has no ego – he knows all too well that both he and Micah are cursed, that they live a life of terrible crime and immorality. He curses Micah, but he also curses himself, which is really worth mentioning.
