Raymond Santana is one of five teenagers in the infamous “Central Park joggers” assault and rape case. He was just fourteen years old when the incident occurred. He was accused of being involved in the crime along with four other people who were also his friends. Raymond was released from prison after spending five years there. After being released from prison, he, along with his five other friends, filed a lawsuit against the newspaper for malicious prosecution, emotional distress and racial discrimination.
However, even after being released from prison, Raymond was having difficulty embracing civilian life. Although he tried to live a normal life, he confessed that he could not enjoy his life like before the incident. Case of the Central Park Five
There was a lot of debate on social networks about the case of rape and assault of a runner in 1989. The five teenagers; Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise, Antron McCray and Kevin Richardson, including Raymond, were innocent victims in this case. Trisha Meili, who was raped and assaulted, was jogging at night in Central Park, New York. Later, she became unconscious with severe damage to her skull and her blood leaked out of her body.
Likewise, after prolonged periods of investigation, the five detained teenagers confessed to being victims of the attacks. Matías Reyes, who was the real person behind the rape and assault, faced the person responsible for the case after 12 years. Matías confessed to the police details about the assault and rape that were not public knowledge and his DNA also matched that of the crime scene. He was later also found guilty of another rape two days before the Meili incident, but was never a suspect in the Central Park Jogger case. During the incident, Matías Reyes had been convicted of a series of rapes and a murder and was in prison. Additionally, Reyes crossed paths with one of the Central Park Five, Korey Wise, twice during his incarceration.
Finally, after DNA testing, the five men annulled the conviction, while Matías Reyes is currently serving time for those crimes. Later, Raymond, along with his four other friends, filed a lawsuit in court against the newspaper for publishing malicious accusations, emotional distress and also for racial discrimination. Additionally, they received $41 million in the deal. Additionally, Santana’s friend, Korey Wise, was sentenced as an adult and thus spent the longest time in prison and was able to receive the bulk of the $12 million.
