Raw Ewry was a legendary American track athlete. He specialized mainly in standing long jumps. The record holder in the field has been nicknamed “The Human Frog”, for his extraordinary ability to jump high. He is the only Olympian to have won eight gold medals in individual events.

Early life

Raw Ewry was born on October 14, 1873, in Lafayette, Indiana, United States of America. His real name is Raymond “Ray” Clarence Ewry. There is also no information about the names and professions of his parents and siblings. He has an American nationality. Likewise, he belonged to the Caucasian ethnicity. He had Libra as his star and followed Christianity.

Raw Ewry chose to be an athlete in his life. But things were not so easy. He suffered polio when he was 7 years old, forcing him to remain in a wheelchair. Within a few years he began playing football and was also captain of his university’s track team.

This successful athlete later specialized mainly in jumping; either standing long jump or standing triple jump. His first Olympic appearance was in 1900, in Paris. He later went on to give brilliant performances at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis, Missouri, 1906 and 1908, London. At the club level, he performed for the New York Athletic Club and helped win 15 United States Amateur Track and Field Championships. Unfortunately, the Olympic Committee discontinued long jump internationally in the 1930s. After his career as an engineer, he went on to design boilers for American warships during World War I. He was lead engineer in the construction of an aqueduct that is still in use and carries water from the Catskill Mountains to New York City. .

For his outstanding career, the Olympic Committee inducted him into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame in 1983. He even has a monument at Lafayette Jefferson High School built by the Greater Lafayette community in honor of their local hero. He even has a stretch of road called the Raymond Clarence Ewry Memorial Parkway in Indiana, named in 2014.
