Ravindra Kaushik was born on 11 April 1952 (age 49 years; at the time of his death in 2001) in an ordinary family in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Most of his childhood was spent in Sri Ganganagar. Growing up, he witnessed the India-Pakistan war between 1965 and 1971.
After schooling from a government school in Sri Ganganagar, he joined SD Bihani College, a private college in Sri Ganganagar, to pursue a B.Com degree. While in college, Ravindra developed the habit of acting and started participating in various dramatic plays and dramas. He became very famous in his college for his acting skills.
After his college, he joined RAW and started working as an undercover agent in Pakistan. After giving many valuable information to India, he was eventually captured by the Pakistani Army and imprisoned. While in jail, Ravindra used to write letters to his family; Explaining the trauma he was going through. Some of his letters also indicate that he was not happy with the Indian government’s policies in addressing the problems faced by an Indian intelligence agent. In one such letter he wrote,
Is this what those who sacrifice for a big country like India get?”
In another letter he wrote sarcastically,
If I had been an American, I would have been out of this jail in three days.”
Family, Caste and Wife
Ravindra Kaushik was born in a Brahmin family. His father JM Kaushik served in the Indian Air Force and after his retirement he started working in a mill in Sri Ganganagar. After hearing the news of Ravindra’s death, he died of shock and heart attack. His mother Amaladevi died in 2006. His younger brother, Rajeshwarnath Kaushik, who is two years younger than Ravindra, lives in Jaipur. Ravindra Kaushik’s nephew Vikram Vashishtha also lives in Jaipur. During his stint in the Pakistani Army, Ravindra met his future wife Amanat. A Muslim girl named Amanat was the daughter of a Pakistani Army soldier. Ravindra Kaushik married Amanat and had a daughter from her.

Once, he was performing at an event in Lucknow, and it was here that a RAW officer approached him to join RAW. Ravindra accepted the offer, and after completing his graduation in commerce, he moved to Delhi in 1973 to join RAW. He joined RAW as an intelligence agent at the age of 23. RAW officials told Ravindra that he would be sent on a special trip to Pakistan. Objective; Where he will work as an undercover agent. After two years of grueling training, Ravindra was sent to Pakistan in 1975. During training he had to learn Urdu and customs of Pakistan. He was also given information about the geographical location of Pakistan. To present himself as a devout Muslim, Ravindra was converted to Islam and was also circumcised. He arrived in Pakistan as a resident of Islamabad and was given the nickname of Nabi Ahmed Shakir. Soon after reaching Pakistan, Ravindra got admission in Karachi University where he started studying law. After completing LLB from Karachi University, Ravindra Kaushik was inducted into the Pakistan Army. After serving as a commissioned officer in the Military Accounts Department of the Pakistan Army, he was soon promoted to the rank of Major in the Pakistan Army. While serving in Pakistani Army, Ravindra gave many important information to India. In 1979, he carried out a major operation that won him praise from his bosses. For his courage, SB Chavan, the then Home Minister of India, gave him the title of “Black Tiger”.

Ravindra Kaushik was captured by the Pakistani Army after being active between 1979 and 1983; After his cover was inadvertently exposed by another Indian intelligence agent named Inayat Masih, who was sent by the Indian intelligence agency to fix a meeting with Ravindra. In 1985, Ravindra Kaushik was sentenced to death; However, in 1990, the Pakistan Supreme Court commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment. After spending the last 18 years of his life in various prisons in Pakistan, including Sialkot and Kot Lakhpat, Ravindra Kaushik died of TB and heart disease on 21 November 2001.
Controversy
Ravindra Kaushik’s nephew Vikram Vashishtha claimed that the story of the Salman Khan starrer Ek Tha Tiger (2012) was based on the life of Ravindra Kaushik. He also demanded that Ravindra Kaushik’s name should be given credit in the film.
