News about Daronte Jones
The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman reports that LSU’s next defensive coordinator will likely be Daronte Jones, the Vikings’ full-back coach.
As a result, the Vikings will have to hire a new defender coach for the second consecutive season. For the first six years of the Mike Zimmer era, Jerry Gray served in that position; however, he resigned last season to join the Packers. Jones was hired as Gray’s replacement almost exactly a year ago. Now, he’s taking an important step forward by joining Ed Orgeron’s staff at LSU and taking on DC’s responsibilities for a dominant college football program.
In addition, it turns out that the Vikings currently have three key positions on the coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak has resigned, special team coordinator Marwan Maalouf has not renewed his contract and Jones is now leaving for a better job.
That was a significant obstacle for the Vikings. Zimmer and the players he worked with praised Jones for his efforts for the 2020 team in this particular year. During his first and only season in Minnesota, Jones was faced with a pandemic, as well as a lot of inexperience and cornering situations.
Three rookies (Jeff Gladney, Cameron Dantzler and Harrison Hand) and several other young players (Mike Hughes, Kris Boyd and Holton Hill) took up most of the CB room at the start of the season. Due to the outbreak, Jones was forced to learn how to teach and coach these players online because there was no OTA or regular training camp.
When the season finally started, the Vikings went through the first half of the year without starting the same three corners twice due to injury. Jones was able to make significant strides with the CB team despite all that revenue, and with the help of experienced safes Harrison Smith and Anthony Harris.
In particular, Dantzler excelled for most of the second half of the season. Boyd, Hand and Gladney advanced. Even Chris Jones, who was dropped mid-season, has performed admirably in his place.
This year, “he made the money,” Smith added. He does a great job of outlining exactly what to do and what to expect, without overwhelming the team with details that can slow things down. Based on experience level alone, there may be a trade-off there. He did a great job giving us enough knowledge to progress without a hitch, starting from the basics and going beyond that.
