One of the nation’s most influential teachers union leaders, Randi Weingarten, was criticised Thursday on CNN for advocating lockdowns in schools.
Weingarten was reprimanded by CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings during a discussion about school lockdowns and the COVID response in the United States. Jennings launched what would be a protracted criticism of Weingarten’s pro-lockdown rhetoric by saying, “Speaking on behalf of millions of American parents.”
He continued, “I had to teach them at home,” referring to his four kids. They had to be taught at home by my wife. Speaking to Weingarten directly, Jennings stated, “I am astounded at what you have said this week about your professing to have wished to reopen schools.
After addressing her union’s involvement in influencing public policy on school lockdowns during her testimony before the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic on Wednesday, Weingarten sparked outrage.
Weingarten and the teacher’s unions as a whole have been under fire from opponents for pushing for the closure of schools during the pandemic. Weingarten stated that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ handling of pandemic limits will result in “millions” of deaths in 2021, however, she later recanted that remark. In particular, during 2020, Jennings persisted in criticising Weingarten for her statements regarding COVID school lockdowns.
He replied, “I think you’ll find that most parents think you’re the spearhead of school closures.” “You made a lot of statements scaring people to death about the idea of opening schools throughout the summer of ’20. And I hear absolutely no regret for the generational harm done to these children.
Two of Jennings’ children require additional support in the classroom, so Weingarten’s policies had a particularly negative impact on them, he said.
“I have two children who struggle with learning. Do you realise how challenging it is for children to learn at home instead of in a setting that was created just for them? And I’m startled to hear you stand before Congress and the American people and admit, “Oh, I wanted to open them up the whole time. I’m in awe. I’m shocked,” Jennings repeated.
