Viral video of Manipur women
In July 2023, a video went viral on the internet, showing two women being paraded naked on a street by a group of men. The video was apparently shot on May 4, when two Kuki women were decapitated by men from the other community and then paraded naked in Bi Phanom village of Kangpokpi district, amid ongoing ethnic conflict between the Meiteis and the Kukis. The video sparked nationwide outrage, with many popular figures including politicians and celebrities condemning the act. Responding to the chilling video, Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh said the government was considering the “death penalty” for those responsible. Soon after the video went viral on social media platforms, the government issued an official order to Twitter and other social media platforms, directing them not to circulate the viral video depicting the naked parade of two Manipuri women.
A case of kidnapping, gang rape and murder was registered against the culprits at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district and 12 teams were formed by the Manipur police to arrest the accused. Based on the police complaint, on the day of the incident, around 800 to 1,000 people, armed with sophisticated weapons, attacked B.J. Attacked the Phenom village. They proceeded to ransack, loot property and set houses on fire. The suspects behind these acts are believed to be affiliated with Meitei organizations. In the midst of the attack, a group of five villagers, consisting of two men and three women, took refuge in the forest to escape the violence. However, he was eventually rescued by the Nongpok Sekmai police team and was being taken to the police station when a mob overpowered and abducted him. Tragically, the mob killed a man instantly, and three women suffered horrific agony as they were forced to strip, and one of them, aged 21, was brutally gang-raped. When her 19-year-old brother tried to intervene to save her, he too lost his life at the hands of the violent mob. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a social media post talking about the Manipur incident said,
Heartbroken by the incident in Manipur. The whole nation feels ashamed; Such incidents of violence are shameful for the entire country and every citizen.
