He grew up in Chembur, Bombay. She did her schooling from Our Lady of Perpetual Succor High School, Mumbai. Born in a family with a musical background, Sampath developed a keen interest in Carnatic music at a very young age. He learned Carnatic music for eight years while in school. After completing his schooling, Sampath joined RA Podar College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai to pursue a course in commerce. Ram joined a rock band during his college days in which he played keyboard. At the age of 16, Sampath started visiting music studios to find a chance to compose. In 1994, he got the opportunity to compose music for the beauty pageant Femina Miss India 1994.

Ram Sampath started his career by creating jingles for TV advertisements. He has worked on the music of commercials for brands like Airtel, DoCoMo, Thums Up, Pepsi and The Times of India.

Sampath gained immense popularity for composing the music for the hit track ‘Bhaag DK Bose’ from the film “Delhi Belly” (2011). In 2008, he collaborated with Australian rock band INXS to record Indian versions of their songs “God’s Top Ten,” “Devil’s Party,” and “Afterglow.” He has also performed in many stage shows.

Controversy

In 2008, Sampath filed a case against the makers of the film Crazy 4 (2008) for copying the music composed by him. Later, the Bombay High Court ruled that two songs from the film, including the title track, were stolen. The songs copied the hook phrase from a Sony Ericsson advertisement, which was composed by Sampath. The court ordered a stay on the release of the film, after which the matter was settled outside the court. The producers of the film paid Sampath Rs. 2 million, and then the film was released with songs.
