Luthra & Luthra – Law Firm
After completing his LLB, Rajeev Luthra co-founded Luthra & Luthra – Law Office India, a law firm in New Delhi with Mohit Saraf in 1991. The firm later started working with famous industrialists and businessmen, taking care of their taxes and financial assets and giving them legal advice. Subsequently, his company was contracted by an American-based company to work in a consultant capacity and help them do business in China. Through his law firm, Luthra played a key role in the merger of Coca-Cola and Parle Bisleri in 1993. His firm played a key role in the $4 billion project merger of Sun Pharma and Ranbaxy in 2015. In 2018, Luthra canceled the appointment of Mohit Saraf due to a dispute over stake in the following partnership. In an interview, Rajiv talked about terminating Mohit’s appointment and said,
To explain his point, on October 12, 2020, he (Mohit Saraf) sent me a notice and retired me from the firm. Of course he had no such authority. Immediately after this letter, he sent a detailed email to a company informing everyone that I had retired from the company. That same evening he intended to distribute the equity I had to others. This left me with no option but to wind up the firm in order to save it and save the fortunes of the clients who would suffer due to the dissolution of the firm.
Later Mohit Saraf filed a case in Delhi High Court against his dismissal. In 2021, High Court Justices RS Endlaw and Sanjeev Narula delivered their verdict in Saraf’s favor and asked Luthra to pay Rs. Apart from this Rs 52 crore. Rs.25 crore as bank guarantee. The company suffered another setback in July 2022 when its litigation department left it and joined DSK Legal. As of 2023, the law firm has over 350 employees and has branches in Mumbai and Bengaluru. He later played a key role in drafting and introducing amendments to the Copyright Act of 1957.
