Raja Patria is an Indian politician and member of the Indian National Congress (INC) who made headlines in December 2022 for inciting people to ‘assassinated’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ‘save the Constitution’.

Raja Patria was born in 1960 (age 62 years; as of 2022), and hails from Hatta, Madhya Pradesh. He attended Mahakaushal Science College, Jabalpur University, Madhya Pradesh, where he dropped out in the second year of his B.Sc. He was an active student leader during his college days in Jabalpur.

Raja Patria’s association with the Congress began in 1971 in Jabalpur when he was studying in a science college. Around 1991–92, he was elected to the Madhya Pradesh Assembly for the first time when he contested and won the by-election from Hatta Assembly constituency. During the 1993 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, he contested from Hatta, but he lost to BJP candidate Vijay Singh. In 1998, he contested from Hatta assembly seat and won by defeating BJP candidate Dr. Vijay Singh Rajput. From 1998 to 2003, he was the Minister of State for Technical Education, Medical Education and Information Technology in the Digvijay Singh-led Congress government of MP. Besides, he was also made in-charge of Panna district. Subsequently, Hatta was declared a reserved seat for Scheduled Castes (SC). Therefore, Patria expanded its reach into Panna and secured a ticket to contest the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Khajuraho. He contested the 2009 general election from Khajuraho Lok Sabha seat, but lost to BJP candidate Jitendra Singh Bundela by a margin of over 27,000 votes. In the 2014 general elections, he contested from Khajuraho, but was defeated by BJP candidate Nagendra Singh by a margin of 2.5 lakh votes. Later, he started serving as the Vice President of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee.

Once, while giving an interview to a news channel, Patria was asked whether more Congress MLAs could join the BJP, to which he reportedly replied,
At this age no one can trust his wife, he is still an MLA.”
The comment sparked controversy and was condemned by many people.
kill pm modi comment
On 13 December 2022, a video of Raja Patria went viral on the internet in which he urged people to ‘kill’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ‘save the Constitution’. In the video, while addressing Congress workers in Powai tehsil of Panna district, Patria can be heard saying,
Modi will divide people on the basis of religion and caste. The future of Dalits, tribals and other minorities is in danger. If you want to save the Constitution, be prepared to kill Modi in the sense of defeating him.
The comment sparked a political controversy and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attacked the Congress, following which an FIR was lodged against Patria. After this he was arrested from his residence in Hatta. Later he tried to clarify, saying,
My statement was misunderstood. My intention was not actually to assassinate the Prime Minister, but to defeat him in the elections. “It was about defeating a government that supports the ideology of (Nathuram) Godse rather than the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi.”
Condemning his remarks, Congress issued him a show cause notice.
