In 1996, when he was working as a chief assistant and auditioning for a show ‘Phillips 10’, he met Indian actress Mandira Bedi. By that time, Mandira had gained immense popularity with her TV show ‘Shanti’ (1994) and Hindi film ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (1995). Raj first met her when she came for an audition, he liked her immediately. In an interview, Raj talked about meeting Mandira for the first time. He said,
We met seven years ago in producer Nitin Manmohan’s office. I was Mukul Anand’s chief assistant and was busy auditioning for a countdown show called Philips Top 10. Mandira was also called for audition. That’s when I saw him for the first time. He was wearing a red and white striped T-shirt and khaki pants. I had seen her in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, but I had never paid attention to her till then. We used to meet often at Mukul Anand’s house. It took us three meetings before I knew he was the one. I told her I was thinking about marriage. He is a vegetarian and I am a non-vegetarian. Some of our first dates were in Udipi hotels.

Later, they began meeting frequently and soon fell in love with each other. During an interview, Mandira talked about Raj. He said,
He is a basic person, very honest. There is nothing fake about them like people who wear masks to hide their true identity. With Raj, it’s – what you see is what you get.
While talking about Mandira during an interview, Raj said,
Mandira is a cultured, intelligent and beautiful girl. Coming from the same industry, she knew very well how busy life can be. She has always been supportive even in our difficult times. It was simple. I met him, liked him and went after him. I don’t think any man would want to miss such an opportunity.”
He further talked about his first meeting with Mandira’s parents. He said,
There was no objection from my parents, in fact, my mother was really happy that I was settling down. Meeting her parents was a bit awkward initially as she came from a family of bankers. His father is a thorough corporate person. But they soon warmed up to me. I guess they had no choice!”
On the eve of Valentine’s Day, on 14 February 1999, the couple married after two marriage rituals – firstly the couple married according to the Arya Samaj, and then they followed the Anand Karaj ceremony.

After about 12 years, the couple was blessed with a child, Veer Kaushal. In July 2020, Raj and Mandira adopted a baby girl and named her Tara Bedi Kaushal.

livelihood
He worked as a director in several Hindi films including ‘Shaadi Ka Laddu’ (2004), ‘Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi’ (1999) and ‘Anthony Kaun Hai’ (2006). He produced some Hindi films like ‘Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi’ (1999), ‘Shaadi Ka Laddu’ (2004), and ‘My Brother…Nikhil’ (2005). Raj directed stunts in the Hindi film ‘Bekhudi’ in 1992. In 2021, he was working on the Hindi web series ‘Akkad Bakkad’.

Death
He died of cardiac arrest at 4.30 am on 30 June 2021. Many popular Indian celebrities shared their grievances upon his demise. Indian actor Ronit Roy shared an emotional message on his social media account. He has written,
And just like that, he left, without even saying goodbye. Too numb to react with grief and shock. It’s not fair, not fair at all. Raj, my friend, my brother, wherever your next destination is, keep spreading happiness. Knowing your penchant for nice homes, I’m sure you’re looking for a nice place in paradise right now! We all loved you very much and you know it. Unfortunately, we kept saying next week and that week never came. See you on the other side my brother. Rest in peace until we raise hell again.”
