Both of them founded NDTV, New Delhi Television Limited in 1984. However, in a conversation with a media house, Prannoy Roy announced that he joined NDTV later and it was Radhika who was the actual founder of the NDTV news channel. After the establishment of NDTV, the channel started functioning as a production house for Doordarshan. Soon, it came to be considered the first Indian independent news broadcaster. On this, NDTV set an example in Indian journalism and became a pioneer for broadcast journalism in India. Soon, it became recognized as a legacy brand in the news industry in India. After acquiring the legacy brand, Radhika started working as the Managing Director of NDTV. Later, he was promoted as Chief Executive Producer at NDTV. Radhika was given the responsibility of editorial and backend processes and Prannoy started anchoring on television. Editorial integrity, impartiality and legally binding codes of conduct are the core ethics he embodies in his workplace. Radhika was also credited for providing free sanitary napkins in NDTV offices. According to a senior NDTV official,
If Prannoy Roy is the face of the organisation, Radhika Roy is its heart and soul.
Star India partnered with NDTV to launch its first 24×7 news channel in 1998 and 2003. Under the leadership of Radhika Roy, Star India managed the channel’s infrastructure, while the editorial and production areas were under the responsibility of NDTV. Star India kept the company’s profits while NDTV took the regular fee amount in the partnership deed. In 2003, NDTV was not handed over full editorial control by Star India, and this, in turn, led to disagreements between the two which led to the termination of the partnership deed. Soon, NDTV received an independent power to control the management and also, Radhika chose to launch two new news channels called NDTV 24×7 and NDTV India. On this initiative of Radhika, NDTV became an independent Indian news broadcasting channel. In 2004, under the supervision of Radhika Roy, NDTV became India’s highest leading Indian media company through its public market capitalisation. After 2014, when Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India, NDTV started facing legal and bullying actions and pressures from advertisers on the network. This pressure was denounced as a decline in the independence of the Indian media. NDTV is said to have been ordered to ban its Hindi news channel during the Modi regime; However, a massive protest halted the order. In 2017, an NDTV reporter questioned statements made by the ruling party speaker, resulting in raids on Radhika and Prannoy Roy’s offices and homes by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In 2015, Radhika Roy was in a loan agreement with billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries. Later, NDTV was able to pay off several loan amounts; However, Radhika Roy was questioned about NDTV’s successful payout during the global crisis. In 2019, a report released by Reporters Sans Frontiers, an international news organization, said that Radhika and Prannoy owned 16.32% and 15.95% shares in NDTV, respectively. Apart from this, Radhika and Prannoy also equally own 29.18% stake in NDTV and RRPR Holding Private Limited. In 2019, Radhika Roy and Prannoy Roy were accused of hiding information about loan agreements of the NDTV company and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) barred them from holding board positions in NDTV for two years. Soon, a case against the orders was filed by Radhika and her husband in the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT). He was ordered to pay fifty percent of the fine amount before the second hearing and the amount of the fine was Rs 27 crore. Accordingly, Radhika approached the Supreme Court of India, and as a result, she was exempted from paying the fine amount. Later Justice Dhananjay Y. Chandrachud criticized the tribunal for directly demanding half the fine amount.
