career break
In November 2013, he returned to Bathinda and took a seven-month break from his career.
A startup project based in Mumbai
In May 2014, a Mumbai-based startup company approached Punit Gupta to do a one-month project with him. He came back to Mumbai with Rs 17000, of which he spent Rs 11000 on his flight to Mumbai. In one of his TED talks, he revealed that to survive on Rs 6000 a month in Mumbai, he ate cheap food with laborers and even slept on the floor and said,
Eventually, a startup called me to complete a project in a month and their budget was half my salary. I agreed and went to join them, because I thought I would get a permanent job within that month. This startup asked me to come by flight and get reimbursement after joining, but when I joined, they said it will take 15 days to approve and hence it will be credited in my salary after a month. When I left home, I had 17 thousand rupees in my account and 11 thousand rupees were spent on the flight. There was no way I could survive in Mumbai with 6 thousand. So, I decided to eat cheap food and find a cheap place to stay. All my friends had left Mumbai by that time and I had no place to share an apartment. But one of them asked me to stay at his friend’s house and when I went there I saw that there were already a lot of people in that flat and there was no extra bed. I slept on the floor in that apartment for a few days. For breakfast I drank half a cup of coffee filled with sugar so that I wouldn’t feel hungry. For lunch, I found an amazing place where workers eat, and they serve 5 puris with unlimited vegetables and salad for Rs 15. For dinner, I used to eat raw bread and have milk.
BNP Paribas India Solutions Pvt Ltd
After completing that project, in June 2014, he joined BNP Paribas India Solutions Pvt. Ltd. in Mumbai as a software developer. He worked there for 10 months and resigned from his post in March 2015.
CodeYeti Software Solutions Pvt. Ltd.
In April 2015, he became the co-founder and CEO of CodeYeti Software Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Ltd., Noida. In September 2017, the company removed him from his post.
Astrotalk
In October 2017, he founded Astrotalk, an astrological forecasting app. This app became the market leader in terms of revenue within 2 years. After COVID-19, the app’s revenue increased to Rs 23 lakh. In an interview, Puneet Gupta revealed the revenue of the app and his belief in astrology behind the creation of the app and said,
I founded this company after an astrologer made a very accurate prediction about me and then I thought of taking this science to the masses. After the Covid-19 crisis, our daily revenue has increased to Rs 23 lakh as people are worried about their job security, relationship status and mental conflicts are also increasing. Total mobile app installs to date are 4.1 million and our repeat customer rate is 13 per year, the highest in any industry.β
In March 2017, along with MaskChat, they launched another app called Boom. Puneet Gupta also gives TED talks about his success and life lessons.

Facts/General Knowledge
- During his first job, once a senior colleague offered to assist Puneet in an astrology prediction. Puneet tried astrology despite never believing in it. He predicted that Puneet might leave his job but he also expected that his startup would close due to his partner’s departure in April 2017. He said that he should not be worried as he will start something new in 2017-18 which will be a big success. Puneet eventually announced his resignation, even though he did not think his predictions would come true. He actually had a successful startup, but as fate would have it, his partner left him in March 2017.
Before I left my job in 2015 to start an IT services company, a colleague, who was also an astrologer, foisted a prophecy on me. I didn’t ask for it and I even made fun of him but he told me how my next 4 years were going to be. He predicted that my company would do very well for 2 years but would start to decline after my partner left. And as he said, the company did very well and our team size was 45. Furthermore, my partner left me in March 2017 and the business collapsed and then the company closed down by the end of 2017. This was very much a surprise to me because I always thought that astrologers have the same favorite saying, “You don’t get as much as you try” which is true for everyone. But that co-worker has predicted some real nonsense. That’s when I thought of starting in the field of astrology and recruiting astrologers like him who can really help people. Today, we have completed 3 years in business and are valued at over US$150 million.
