Preneet started her political career in 1999 when she contested the general elections from Patiala Lok Sabha constituency. His party did not win the election, but he won the seat. In the next election, 2004, the party won the election and he retained his seat. During his tenure, he handled Food, Civil Supplies and Public Distribution; women empowerment; Public Undertakings; and water resources committees. In 2007, Amarinder Singh left the party and Preneet also had to give up the seat. He assumed office again in 2009 when his party won the elections.
