Pop Smoke was an American rapper, songwriter and singer. He rose to fame after releasing his single “Welcome to the Party” in 2019. He died on February 19, 2020, during a home invasion at his California home.

Bashar Barack Jackson, known professionally as Pop Smoke, was born on July 20, 1999 (Tuesday) (age 20 years at the time of death) in Brooklyn, New York. He could not complete his education properly because he was expelled from school for bringing a gun. Subsequently, he spent two years in home confinement on weapons charges. At the age of 15, he was given a scholarship to Rocktop Academy, Philadelphia, but unfortunately, he was asked to leave the academy due to some health problems. The story behind his name is that he chose Pop Smoke because his grandmother called him Poppa and his childhood friends called him Smoke.

Pop Smoke began his career in the year 2018 alongside other recording artists such as Jay Guapo, where he would remix some popular songs within New York City drill music. After learning, he moved towards creating original music and released his first single, “MPR”. Later that year, in 2019, he released another song, “Flexing”, which reached 100,000 views in less than 24 hours. Shortly thereafter, Pop Smoke signed a deal with Victor Victor Worldwide, a subsidiary of Universal Music. One song that moved his family was his breakout single, “Welcome to the Party”. The song was the lead single from their debut album, “Meet the Woo”. He did many collaborations with artists like Jackboys, Travis Scott, etc. In February 2020, “Meet the Woo 2” was released with songs by Quavo, Lil Tjay, A Boogie with da Hoodie and others. To the surprise of their fans, five days later, a deluxe edition of the album was released with three new songs featuring Nav, Gunna and PNB Rock.

Controversy

On January 17, 2020, Pop Smoke was arrested by federal authorities at John F. Kennedy International Airport on vehicle theft charges. The owner of a Rolls-Royce Wraith (valued at $375,000) reported the car to police as stolen after Smoke borrowed it to shoot a music video in California. The car was found at Smoak’s mother’s home in the Brooklyn area. Smoke had to pay $250,000 for his bail.

Death

Pop Smoke died on February 19, 2020, during a home invasion in Hollywood Hills, California. According to officials’ reports, at around 4:30 in the morning, four men wearing caps entered the house and shot him twice. Police arrived at his residence within six minutes and he was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Doctors declared him dead, the cause of death being a bullet wound to the torso. On 10 July 2020, five people were arrested and four were detained in connection with the murder. Those arrested were: Corey Walker (19 years old), Kindre Rodgers (18 years old), and two teenagers aged 17 and 15 respectively.
