Rapper Big Pokey, one of the founders of the Houston group Screwed Up Click, has died. He was 45 years old.
Pokey, whose real name is Milton Powell, died early Sunday morning in Texas after collapsing during a performance, according to multiple reports and multiple messages from friends on social media.
Pokey’s representative announced his death in a statement to local news station KRIV, noting that he was “very much loved by family, friends and loyal fans.”
A representative for Pokey said: “In the coming days, we will release details about his birthday celebration and how the public can express condolences. “During this difficult time, we ask that you respect his family’s privacy. “Big Pokey will always be known as the ‘Hardest Pit of the Year’.”
A representative for Pokey did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE. According to TMZ, Pokey collapsed midway through a performance at Pour09 Bar & Rooftop in Beaumont, Texas late Saturday night into early Sunday.
The hall issued a plea to fans early Sunday morning via Facebook, writing: “The Pour09 family would like to ask that you all pray for Big Pokey at this time.”
As one of the founders of the group Screwed Up Click, the musician made a name for himself by freely performing on DJ Screw’s early DVDs. He’s famous for making a six-minute appearance on Screw’s 35-minute song “June 27.”
Pokey released his debut LP Hardest Pit in the Litter in 1999, followed by D-Game a year later. Before appearing on Paul Wall’s “Sittin’ Sidewayz” three years later, he released his third album, Da Sky Da Limit, in 2002. The song peaked at number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100.
