A Día de Muertos celebration within Pokémon GO includes Incense bonuses, a free cosmetic item and rare event encounters with Pokémon like Shiny Alolan Marowak. The alternate reality mobile game often holds in-game events to coincide with specific holidays, further immersing players in the monster collection experience and giving them the chance to gain exclusive rewards. Pokémon GO‘s Halloween event filled the game with tricks and treats for two weeks before coming to an end on October 31.
Pokémon GO holds a big Halloween event every year, with the festivities usually putting emphasis on the franchise’s more unsettling Ghost- and Dark-type pocket monsters. This year was no different, with the 2021 event making Ghost-type Pokémon much more common between October 22 and 31. More adorable costumed Pokémon, such as Halloween Mischief Pikachu and Piplup, were also added to increase the Halloween atmosphere. Several special events were held throughout the two-part event, such as a five-star Raid against the terrifying Altered Forme Giratina and the addition of four brand-new Pokémon to the game. Pokémon GO added the pumpkin Pokémon Pumpkaboo, with a recent Collection Challenge that tasked trainers with capturing the combined Ghost- and Grass-type creature.
Following the Halloween event, Pokémon GO is now running a Día de Muertos event between November 1 and 2. The special event commemorates the Day of the Dead, which is celebrated in Mexico and other parts of the Americas. During the two-day event Lure Modules and Incense will last for 90 minutes, giving players more time to attract valuable monsters, while trainers in Latin American and the Caribbean will enjoy encountering event-specific Pokémon much more frequently. Wild encounters will pit Pokémon GO players up against rare Pokémon, like Shiny Drifloon and Shiny Yamask, while using Incense or Lures will draw in even more valuable prey like Shiny Alolan Marowak. A free event box and cosmetic Día de Muertos avatar shirt will also be available until November 2.
While Pokémon GO‘s Halloween event took up the month of October, developer Niantic still has plenty of festivities planned for November. The Día de Muertos event will ring in the beginning of the month, and then Pokémon GO‘s Festival of Lights event will run between November 5 and 14. Inspired by celebrations in India and other parts of the world, the Diwali event will introduce the adorable Electric- and Fairy-type Pokémon Dedenne to the game. The Pokémon GO celebration will also update mechanics like eggs and Raids, adding variety by changing which Pokémon can be encountered.
Despite a big two-week event ending just recently, Pokémon GO seems determined to support its player base with a constant stream of fresh and fun content. The Día de Muertos event pays homage to an important holiday, with special in-game items and encounters effectively reflecting the color and fun of the Day of the Dead. With a free event box and a chance to encounter rare Pokémon like Shiny Alolan Marowak, every player will likely find something exciting during Día de Muertos.
Pokémon GO is available on iOS and Android.
