According to his wife, Susan Bitker, American author Peter Straub died of complications from a hip injury. He was 79 years old. Straub, a novelist known for his works of psychological horror, horror literature, and dark fantasy, died September 4 at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in Manhattan. Emma Straub pays tribute to her father with a series of touching photos and letters on Instagram. Emma, like her father, is a best-selling author.

Stephen King and Peter Straub collaborated on The Talisman in 1984 and Black House in 2001. King also paid tribute to his former collaborator and close friend on Twitter.

A Brief History of Peter Straub’s Career as a Famous Author
Straub was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on March 2, 1943. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1965 and a master’s degree in English from Columbia University. He and his family later moved to Ireland, where he began his studies but did not complete his Ph. According to Peter Straub’s official website, he developed a passion for storytelling at a young age after nearly dying in a car crash.

And his story, though despite the fact that he was still a sociable young man with many friends, headed towards the dark and gaudy, gruesome and murderous, when he knew he could turn those things into humor, he developed his first ‘effect’.”
Instead of completing his doctorate, he published two volumes of poetry Ishmael and Open Air in 1972, followed by the novel Marriage the following year. On the advice of his agency, Peter Strub began writing gothic fiction. His first book, Julia, was published in 1975. He became famous with the publication of his sixth book, Ghost Story, in 1979. Both of his works were adapted into films.
Other films in which he has appeared include The Throat, Floating Dragon, The Hellfire Club and The Ghost Village. Peter Straub has been nominated 14 times for the Bram Stoker Prize during his remarkable 4-decade career, winning 10. He has also been nominated 12 times for the World Fantasy Award, winning 4 award among them. The late author received the Stoker Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 and the International Horror Society’s Living Legend Award two years later. Personally, he married Susan Bitker in 1966. They have two children, Benjamin and Emma.
