Romanuk volunteered for the Sunday broadcasts of the Toronto Marlboros on CKLN-FM, Ryerson’s campus radio, from 1981 to 1984. He began his career working for play-by-play announcer Michael Landsberg as a statistician and technical crew. .
Romanuk got his first paid broadcast job in 1983, while still a Ryerson college student, when he was hired as a color analyst for the Oshawa Generals youth hockey on CKAR 1350 AM radio along with Mike Inglis. By 1984, Inglis had moved on and Romanuk had taken over the play-by-play duties, which he did until 1987.
After graduation, Romanuk worked for CBC Sports as a stats assistant and running back for broadcaster Bob Cole, color analyst Harry Neale, and studio host Dave Hodge on Hockey Night in Canada. In 1985, Romanuk began working as an editorial assistant in the newsroom for TSN, a new cable channel dedicated exclusively to sports. Ultimately, Romanuk was hired to host the OHL Game of the Week show on the Global Television Network during the 1986-87 season. Romanuk joined TSN as a full-time commentator and reporter in October 1987.
Similarly, he was the supporting voice of TSN play-by-play hockey behind Jim Hughson and reported NHL play-by-play games for the NHL on TSN. Hughson resigned from TSN, and Romanuk was the network’s primary NHL play-by-play announcer from the 1994–95 season through the 1997–98 season.

After fourteen years with TSN, Romanuk accepted an offer to host a morning drive show on The Team 1050, a newly rebranded AM station in Toronto, in the spring of 2001.
