Paul Kennedy Biography
Paul Kennedy grew up in Wallsend, Northumberland, and went to St. Cuthbert’s Grammar School in Newcastle. Following that, he graduated from Newcastle University with first-class honors in history and earned his Ph.D. from St. Antony’s College, Oxford, under the guidance of A. J. P. Taylor and John Andrew Gallagher. Between 1970 through 1983, he was a member of the University of East Anglia’s History Department. He is a Scholar of the Royal Historical Society and a previous visiting fellow at Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. Kennedy was the Phillipe Roman Professor of History and International Affairs at the London School of Economics from 2007 to 2008.
Career
- He was appointed J. Richardson Dilworth Professor of British History at Yale in 1983. He is now the Director of International Security Studies, where he teaches the Studies in Grand Strategy course alongside John Lewis Gaddis and Charles Hill.
- Professor Kennedy began teaching “Military History of the West Since 1500” at Yale in 2012, expanding on his depiction of military history as inextricably linked with economic power and technical progress.
- His best-known work, The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers, examines the relationship between economics and strategy during the last five centuries.
- Fellow historians praised the work, with A. J. P. Taylor called it “an encyclopedia in itself” and Sir Michael Howard called it “a truly humanistic book in the very finest meaning of the word.” It’s been translated into 23 other languages.
- Kennedy explores the past and future of the United Nations in his 2006 book The Parliament of Man.
