Mike Markkula is an electrical engineer, entrepreneur, and investor from the United States. Mike Markkula is best known as the second CEO of Apple Computer, Inc., providing critical start-up financing and administrative support. He owned 26% of Apple at the time of its founding, which was equal to the shares each of co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.

Apple

Markkula came out of retirement to invest in Apple after Steve Jobs convinced him to support production of the Apple II. Through Don Valentine, a venture capitalist, and Regis McKenna, Jobs met Markkula. He made the decision to invest US$250,000 (US$170,000 as a loan and US$80,000 as an equity investment), believing in Jobs’ ability to run a company.

He became Apple’s third owner and third employer thanks to his financial support. In addition, he helped the company acquire credit and venture capital. As a result, Michael Scott was appointed as the company’s first CEO. Markulla served as Apple’s second CEO from 1981 to 1983 and as Chairman of the Board of Directors from 1985 to 1997.

During this time, he gave Jef Raskin the go-ahead to begin implementing his 1979 plan to design what would become the Macintosh. He also helped the company obtain incorporation status.

Markkula, as a trained engineer, possessed some technical skills that enabled him to write several early Apple II programs and beta test Apple hardware and software. Markkula created one of the first three Apple III programs.

Apple III, on the other hand, was a flop. After leaving Apple in 1985, Jobs returned as interim CEO in 1996. That year, Markkula left the company.

After leaving Apple

Markkula joined Echelon Corporation after leaving Apple and has also worked at ACM Aviation, San Jose Jet Center, and Rana Creek Habitat Restoration.
