Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce sparked a heated debate online after Kansas City Chiefs players walked out following a deadly shooting.
Both Mahomes and Kelce kept their original plans to meet with other players on the team. That same day, a shooting occurred during the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory parade, injuring 20 people and killing one.
Mahome and Kelce went to Granfalloon Restaurant and Bar in Kansas City. Mahomes had the idea of renting the establishment. Several police officers attended to assist with maintaining security.
TMZ wrote about the Kansas City Chiefs party, criticizing the players for attending. The outlet argued that they should have canceled out of respect for the deceased and injured.
However, the story sparked heated debate online. Some agreed with TMZ and criticized Kelce for her involvement. One wrote“They basically didn’t give them a damn.”
However, the players also had several followers. One wrote: “They were hungry after all the chaos. Beaches have to eat.” Another commented: “Are they supposed to shelter inside their homes and do nothing?” Another commented: “Were they supposed to go home and cancel their plans?”
One person questioned the atmosphere of the party, writing: “How do any of you know the atmosphere inside your private event? “It is very possible that, while it was planned as a party (it may have simply been a private dinner), they were also relaxing with their friends and family after the tragedy.”
Travis Kelce shares his support for the victims
Following the shooting, Kelce turned to X to condemn the tragedy and share his support for the victims. “I am heartbroken by the tragedy that took place today,” he wrote on X. “My heart goes out to everyone who came to celebrate with us and was affected. KC, you mean a lot to me.”
Similarly, Mahomes also shared: “Praying for Kansas City.”
Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu also offered his support to those affected. He said: “Prayers for those affected in today’s parade. A time of celebration ends in tragedy. When are we going to fix these gun laws? How many more people have to die to say enough is enough? “It is too easy for the wrong people to obtain guns in the United States and that is a FACT.”
The NFL issued a statement following the shooting.
“We are deeply saddened by the senseless shooting that occurred today near the end of the Chiefs rally in Kansas City,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with the victims and all those affected. “We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency personnel.”
