Parakala Prabhakar is an Indian politician, political economist, political commentator, social activist and a television presenter. He is the husband of Nirmala Sitharaman, the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of the Government of India in 2019.

Parakala Prabhakar was born on 2 January 1959 (age 60 years; as in 2019) in Narasapuram, Andhra Pradesh. Their zodiac sign is Capricorn. Parakala received his primary education from Lakshminarasamamba Municipal School, Narasapuram and went to People’s High School in Himayathnagar, Hyderabad for his high schooling. Prabhakar received his senior secondary education from Nampally Junior College, Hyderabad and Sri YN College, Narsapuram. He graduated from Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada and went to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, to pursue Master of Arts (M.A.) and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.). Subsequently, Parkala moved to the London School of Economics (LSE) to complete his PhD. He presented a thesis on “Security Theory and Foreign Policy Practice: A Study of Brazil, Ghana and Indonesia”. Prabhakar worked on his thesis under the supervision of Christopher Coker in the Department of International Relations.

Family, Caste and Wife
Parakala Prabhakar belongs to a Brahmin family. His father, Parakala Seshavataram, was an MLA who served in three consecutive cabinets in the state of Andhra Pradesh and his mother, Parakala Kalikamba, was a member of the Legislative Assembly from Andhra Pradesh. He has an elder sister.
Prabhakar married Nirmala Sitharaman in 1986. They have a daughter, Wangmayi.
livelihood
Being born in a family with political background, Prabhakar was familiar with electoral politics since childhood. However, his introduction to politics came when he was elected president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ union from the National Students Union of India (NSUI). In 1984, he was appointed as the All India Vice President of the NSUI Central Committee and traveled to several states and universities to organize the activities of the student wing of the Congress Party. In 1986, Prabhakar moved to London for his higher education. On his return from London, he was assigned the post of ‘Officer on Special Duty’ by Narasimha Rao to look after the implementation of the ‘Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD)’ project. He resigned from RGNIYD charge in 1994 and contested the Legislative Assembly elections from Andhra Pradesh. Prabhakar lost the election by 20,000 votes.
In 1996, he contested the Lok Sabha by-election from Narasapuram assembly constituency and lost by a slim margin. Internal arguments within the party led him to exit the Congress. In 1997, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He contested the Lok Sabha elections from Narsapur constituency in 1998 and lost again. Parakala played an active role in party affairs and became the party spokesperson from Andhra Pradesh. He became a member of the BJP’s National Economic Cell which guided the party’s economic policy and a member of a task force of the Planning Commission of India which prepared the Tenth Five Year Plan.
In 2006, he contested the general elections from the East and West Godavari districts constituency and lost for the fourth time. After this he resigned from BJP. In 2008, some like-minded people approached him to start a new political platform. Chiranjeevi was the face of the party. Prabhakar gave his support to this idea and founded ‘Prajarajyam Party’. Parakala was one of the founding general secretaries and spokespersons of the party. In the 2009 assembly elections, the party secured only 18 seats and Parakala’s electoral political career came to an end.
In June 2014, Prabhakar was appointed as the Communications Advisor to the Government of Andhra Pradesh. As a communications advisor he set up communications networks for the state. He also introduced social media in every department of the government. After serving the government for almost four years, Prabhakar resigned from his post on 19 June 2018. In his resignation, he mentioned that he was saddened by the comments of opposition leaders and did not want any doubt to be cast on the government.
