Many have even noticed the palpable chemistry between Emily Rudd and Mackenyu, who play Nami and Zoro. However, anything more than a friendship just isn’t in the cards.

In a new interview with TVLine, showrunner Steven Maeda revealed that there was a no-romance rule in creator Eiichiro Oda’s condition when the manga was adapted into a live-action series.
“One of the mandates of [manga creator] Eiichiro Oda was against romance on the team,” Steven shared. “That’s a big no, as far as the manga and the live-action show are concerned.”
The chemistry between Mackenyu and Emily was just something that happened, but it will never develop into anything more for the characters.
“It was because they had great chemistry together, but that certainly wasn’t the intention. “One of the fun things about watching television is what you read on it and what you bring to it when you watch a show.”
