Jared Schutz Polis, also known as Jared Polis, is a well-known American politician, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who has served as the 43rd Governor of Colorado since January 2019. He is a Democrat who served on the Colorado State Board of Education for one term from 2001 to 2007. and five terms as United States Representative for Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District from 2009 to 2019. During his service in Congress, he was the sole Democratic member of the libertarian-conservative Liberty Caucus. In 2018, he defeated Republican candidate Walker Stapleton for governor of Colorado.

Polis is the son of founders of Blue Mountain Arts greeting card and book publisher Stephen Schutz and Susan Polis Schutz. He was born in 1975 at Boulder Community Hospital in Boulder, Colorado. As a high school student, he lived in San Diego, California, and graduated from La Jolla Country Day School in three years with distinction. Princeton University awarded him a bachelor’s degree in political science.
