Nik Turner is an excellent saxophonist and flute player.
Nick Turner’s family moved to the seaside town of Margate in Kent when he was 13, and he worked at the local fair during the summer months. He completed his engineering program and served a year in the merchant navy. He met guitarist Dave Brock in 1967 while doing some men’s work around Europe. Details about his family members are still unclear. However, before his family moved in, his father is said to have worked in a gun factory in Oxford. In the early 1960s, Nik Turner studied the clarinet and saxophone for two years and met several jazz performers in Berlin, who taught him the value of expressiveness over technical skill. Turner also has a car and volunteers to serve as Hawkwind’s assistant. This happened not long after the formation of the band.
When the group discovered he could play the saxophone, they invited him to join them. He has contributed to some of their records. However, not everyone in the band is excited about his approach to music, as he is said to have a tendency to overwhelm other members of the band. Turner has appeared on live albums such as Zones, This Is Hawkwind, Do Not Panic and others. In 1976, he left the band.
Nik Turner returned to England and formed the band Sphynx with Alan Powell, Mike Howlett, Tim Blake and Harry Williamson in 1978, releasing the album Xitintoday. He has made guest appearances on Williamson’s Fairy Tales and Gilli Smyth’s Mother Gong. Along with Mo Vicarage, Ermann Ghisio Erba, Trev Thoms and Dead Fred, he formed another group called Inner City Unit. The band recorded albums such as Pass Out and Maximum Effect before disbanding.
Nick Turner’s Fantastic All Stars is his next venture, a mix of jazz and rhythm, blues saxophone and Hammond organ. They played for several years before releasing the album Kubanno Kickasso! In 1993, Pressurehed and Helios Creed asked him to record a version of their project Sphynx with original flute-based tunes. Sphynx, an album, was released the same year. They continued to tour the United States and released another album, Prophecy of Time, in 1994.
The members of Hawkwind reformed in October 2000 at Brixton Academy and eventually agreed on the name Space Rite. Nik also performed at the first Reggae Festival in Wales in 2003. Furthermore, he revived the Inner City Unit version and continues to perform at other festivals.
In 2008, Nik Turner was accepted as a guest member of the Space Mirrors collective, and played the flute and saxophone in three releases of Space Mirrors: Majestic-12: A Hidden Presence, Dreams of Area 51 and In Darkness They Whisper. He also played the flute for Dodson and Fogg and was featured on his fourth album Mr. Ha, Poets, Balladeers, and Cheats.
