Nida Khan and her husband Sheeran Raza Khan were married on 18 February 2015. Sheeran Raza Khan’s family descends from the Aala Hazrat dynasty of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. The Barelvi movement in South Asia was started by the Sufi scholar Ala Hazrat between 1870 and 1890. Nida was in the final year of her master’s degree when she got married to Sheeran Raza Khan. Soon after her marriage, her in-laws demanded dowry from her and she faced triple talaq or instant divorce from her husband within five months of the marriage. According to Nida Khan, before marriage, her in-laws had assured her that they would allow her to pursue further studies after marriage. However, during her final examination her husband forcefully dragged her out of the examination hall in front of the teachers and policemen. No one had the courage to stop Sheeran Raza Khan from humiliating his wife in public because Sheeran Raza belonged to a prestigious family of Uttar Pradesh. Later, she faced domestic violence and once suffered a miscarriage. Soon, she became a victim of triple talaq or instant divorce on 17 July 2015 and her in-laws forced her to perform Nikah Halala. However, she refused and left her in-laws’ house.

As soon as the news of Sheeran Raza Khan’s second marriage was received, Nida Khan came to meet Sheeran’s future bride. Nida showed him photographs of domestic violence injuries and other documents related to dowry demands. Nida narrated the experience of her marriage with this woman and was successful in convincing her to end the marriage. Nida Khan was threatened by her angry husband to break her second marriage. She had gone to lodge a complaint against him. Police officials did not allow them to file a complaint against Sheeran Raza Khan. Later his complaint was registered along with the court notice. The investigation into his case began in April 2017 and a charge sheet was filed in 2018.
Fatwa against Nida Khan
City Imam Mufti Khurshid Alam had issued a fatwa against Nida Khan in July 2018 for rebelling against Islamic practices, especially the triple talaq or instant divorce system. Soon after the fatwa of social boycott was issued against her, Nida Khan while talking to a media house said that India is a democratic country and if anyone wants to issue a fatwa then he can go to Pakistan. He said,
Those issuing the fatwa should “go to Pakistan”. “India is a democratic country. No one can expel me from Islam. Only Allah can decide who is guilty.”
The fatwa issued against Nida Khan reads,
No medicine will be given in case of illness. If she dies, no one is allowed to offer prayers at her ‘Janaza’ (funeral). After his death he cannot be buried in the cemetery.”
According to the fatwa, Nida Khan was directed to leave the country within 3 days and a cash reward of Rs 500 was announced for anyone who would cut Nida Khan’s hair. 11,876.
Politics
Nida Khan entered politics in January 2022. Just before the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, he got the Bharatiya Janata Party ticket. Nida Khan appreciated the work done by Yogi Adityanath ministry for the safety of Muslim women in Uttar Pradesh and she said in the BJP press conference that women are safe in the Yogi Adityanath government. He said,
Triple talaq was the turning point of my life, that’s why I support BJP. BJP has done remarkable work by bringing law against triple talaq. It seems that other parties are just giving slogans of women empowerment and women safety, but only BJP has proved it.”
Her father-in-law Tauqeer Raza Khan and his party extended their support to the Indian National Congress ahead of the Uttar Pradesh 2022 assembly elections.

- Soon after her divorce, Nida Khan wrote a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and in the letter she requested him to cancel the triple talaq practice. She also said in the letter that she did not believe in Islam’s practice of instant divorce. Soon after the divorce, Nida Khan was forced to perform Nikah Halala. In Nikah Halala, Nida Khan had to consummate this marriage by marrying her father-in-law and brother-in-law so that she could remarry her ex-husband. However, she opposed doing so and her in-laws threw her out of the house.
